This is the first English fort built in Tiruchirappalli, Christ Church, north of the Teppakulam , built by Schwartz in the year 1762 - 66 with funds subscribed by officers of the British garrison . It belongs to the society for the propagation of the gospel.Britishers used this church for spreading Christianity in the place.
The city of Trichy also houses several ancient and historic churches out of which St. Joseph is one of the popular ones. It is also one of the oldest Churches of India.
The church also neighbours the famous Maingaurd Gate, which has been a part of many historical events associated with the colonial rule. This church also has a nearby college known as the St. Joseph’s College, which is also a world famous education centre and has produced renowned personalities like R. Venkataraman, and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
